The day we ranked #1 in Google

The day we ranked #1 in Google:

Okay, so this morning I received this text message from my pal Greg (of eagle & chicken fame):

Number one ranked in Google, Celebration, Survive at Work, your one stop resource for work skills, work resources, work tools and work motivation. Hate work? Want promotion? Survive at work will help you thrive at work.

Yes it’s true… SurviveAtWork.com is now ranked first on Google!

That’s number 1 out of the 218,000,000 results which come up when you search for survive at work.

My mind is blown.  Two hundred and eighteen MILLION results… and we’re number 1!

Let me hear you say WOOHOO!!!

It was only back in September that we were celebrating being number 1 on Bing.  Back then, you’ll recall that number 1 on Google was an aspiration… albeit a seemingly unobtainable one.  Since then, we’ve gradually crawled up the rankings, consistently being kept from the top few slots by a few results that appeared to be anchored there, due to the fact they’re “big boy” sites like Life Hacker and Amazon.

But we kept going – we kept our eye on the goal – and, today, we celebrate our victory!

Time for another gratuitous GIF I think:

So, how did we get here?

The last few updates of Google’s algorithms (such as Panda & Penguin), made it possible for smaller sites to rank high in search results, but only if they contained well written, unique and high quality information for their audience.

But, as much as I’d like to take the credit because of my engaging content (try not to smirk) and awesome Search Engine Optimisation (I wish!)… the fact is that YOU got us here!

Over the past few months, I’ve seen a steady increase in the volume of traffic to the site, as well as returning visitors… both of which heavily influence where we are in Google.

So, today I thank you!

Thank you for staying with me and thank you for coming back day after day, week after week 🙂

Cool, so what’s next?
